World Water Day
CSR

Every year, on March 22, World Water Day is celebrated around the world, a global initiative promoted by the United Nations with the aim of making people reflect on the vital importance of fresh water and to act concretely against the growing global water crisis.
Billions of people, in fact, still live without access to clean water and adequate sanitation, an unacceptable reality that involves us all personally. World Water Day serves as a strong reminder that water is a universal right, a precious and not inexhaustible resource, absolutely fundamental to public health, economic development, social stability, peace and the long-term sustainability of our entire planet.
The objectives of World Water Day
World Water Day was first established in 1993, following recommendations from the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. Since then, every year, UN-Water (the United Nations coordination mechanism for water and hygiene) defines a specific theme, focusing global attention on particular aspects of the water challenge and inspiring concrete actions worldwide. Its main objective is a commitment that aims to:
- Raising public awareness about the water crisis
The primary intent is to bring to the attention of governments, non-governmental organizations, the private sector and individual citizens the severity of the global water crisis, which includes water shortages, scarcity, pollution, inefficient resource management and impact of climate change, highlighting how these problems threaten food security, health and social stability on a planetary scale.
- Promote sustainable water resources management
The day is a call to action to encourage and implement virtuous practices that ensure the conservation, protection and efficient use of freshwater resources. This involves adopting innovative solutions to save water in agriculture and industry, purifying wastewater, protecting aquatic ecosystems and promoting resilient infrastructure that can address the challenges of the future.
- Actively contribute to the achievement of SDG 6
World Water Day is closely linked to Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, which aims to "ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all" by 2030. The day serves to mobilize efforts, resources and collaborations to accelerate progress towards this crucial milestone, fundamental to human well-being and global prosperity.
On this very significant day, large-scale information campaigns are launched, events are organized around the world, educational initiatives are promoted and fundamental reports are published, such as the United Nations World Report on Water Resources Development. These are tools that provide in-depth data and analysis to policy makers, stimulating the adoption of more effective and sustainability-oriented water policies.
